Is Your Desk Actually Clean?
Think of places that are pools for germs, bacteria, and viruses. I’m sure the first places to come to mind are toilets, sinks, and kitchen counters. Am I right? What about your desk? What if I told you that your desk’s surface can have up to 400 times more bacteria than the office toilet seat? Pretty disgusting, right?
You may not be aware but your desk is an ideal location for all sorts of germs, bacteria, and viruses to get together and throw a party. Between your keyboard, mouse, and telephone, little nasties can have the biggest family reunion in the office! Where are these uninvited guests coming from? All over the office, of course! That copy machine you touched? Germs. The bathroom doorknob? Bacteria. What about the delicious turkey sandwich that you had for lunch at your desk? Crumbs are just waiting to breed new viruses to introduce to your system.
Food is actually a large reason that these critters are attracted to your desk. A report from the American Dietetic Association showed that 75% of people eat lunch at their desks at least two to three times per week. Since so many people eat at their desks all the time, it turns the desk into a bacteria cafeteria during the day.
While some of these germs can result in a nasty 24-hour stomach bug, or even, a full-blown case of the flu the good news is there is hope to keep the germs in check. Here are some easy tips that can get you started on having a less germy desk:
- Have meals away from the desk, if possible;
- If you have to eat at a desk, use a placemat;
- Clean your desktop regularly and thoroughly;
